Microbiology 2020 Newsletter

I’ve always had a propelling desire to go into the Field of Medicine , however I was unsure as to how to incorporate my love for the lab and my love for medicine. I felt like I was going to eventually have to choose one or the other then, I found out about the degree option for Medical Laboratory Sciences. I instantly began researching about the job and what they do and I knew I had to apply. After talking with various instructors, friends and family, I felt very inclined to actually apply for the program that would help supplement my degree in Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Biology by adding a Medical Laboratory Science option. This could simply do nothing but help me in my academic career and provide me a promising job after college wherever I decided to go In the future. The application process for the School of Medical Laboratory Sciences at Saint Francis Hospital located in Tulsa, Oklahoma was very straight forward. However, it was also one of my first actual professional application processes that I had encountered thus far in my academic career. So, it was rather stressful being sure that I followed the correct order of things I needed to get done but also managing to get everything together that needed to be included into my application packet. Once I had submitted the packet and sent it off, I received an email stating that I had qualified for an interview for this internship. For anyone considering graduate programs or any other interview process, I personally highly recommend learning as much as possibly about what you’re really getting yourself into, the company and/or school, and about the profession itself. Even reaching out to current students or past students to help get a better understanding of the interview process aided me tremendously. This really helped me in my interview and preparing for the basic interview questions and knowing how you’re going to respond to various questions will also help immensely. After my interview I eventually received word that they wanted to offer me a spot in the upcoming class and I was honored to accept that position. Thus far it has definitely been a constant learning experience but I can truly say that I enjoy incorporating my two desires for the laboratory and medicine. MICR 1211: First Year Lab Experience Fall 2019 was the first semester that freshmen were able to enroll in an introductory lab. In the second year of the course, Fall 2020, MICR1211: First year lab experiences was ran by Dr. Garry Marley along with instructional assistant, Abigail Peters . It is a laid back lab where students are graded on participation and willingness to learn lab skills that they will utilize throughout their four years at OKState. This is a great opportunity for all freshmen looking to obtain a microbiology degree or any student that is looking to gain lab experiences early on in their college career.
