The Microbiology Department has a wide variety of professors who are engaged in research. A very simple way that you can find a lab that fits what you are intested in is to go to the faculty page and do some reading on what our professors are studying. If you find something that you think is intersting email the professor and ask if they have any lab openings. What's the worst that can happen? You'll never know until you try!

Undergraduate Research Opportunities (MICR 4990)
The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics offers opportunities for undergraduate students to obtain laboratory skills relevant in the field of microbiology. Students can earn experience AND course credit with the permission of the faculty member by enrolling in MICR 4990 (1 to 4 hours). Our faculty members are involved in cutting-edge research that is funded through regional and national sources; space for undergraduate research students is competitive, but serves as great preparation for graduate school. Students can learn more about the faculty’s research interests by visiting their respective lab pages. MICR 4990 is a rigorous endeavor with rewarding benefits at the conceptual and technical levels. Prospective undergraduate research students are encouraged to contact professors as early as possible in their academic career.
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics fully supports a student’s drive to participate in an REU program. The National Science Foundation funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduates through its REU programs. Each student is associated with a specific research project at its host institution, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Non-REU Internships
Here in the microbiology department, in collaboration with Career Services, we pride ourselves in the fact that our students are competitive, year in and year out, in all types of internships. We stress the importance of internships to our students since it is the opportunity to have a, most-likely, well-paid job while accumulating hands-on experience. The value of internships on a student's resume is increasing in the job and school market.
